Yesterday, Reid (of Britain's ruling Labour Party) delivered a much-anticipated a speech at Demos, a London-based organization that describes itself as "the think tank for everyday democracy," with a "a major program of research on global security." Reid told his audience: "Our adversaries in international terrorism are completely unconstrained....They endeavor to drain our morale through the misuse of our freedoms by misrepresenting every mistake or over-reaction as if it is our primary or real purpose." (ePolitix.com) Reid warned "that Britain may have to give up some of its freedoms in the short term in order to protect them in the long term," and that "the government's terrorism legislation had proved necessary despite the opposition it has met from Parliament, the judiciary and the press." The Home Secretary put it plainly when he stated: "We are...attempting to fight a 21st-century struggle with a framework of thought, culture and international legality which was provided for the mid-20th century." So what about the human rights of ordinary citizens that might get crushed in their government's sincere effort - or zeal - to thwart evil-doers? Alluding to the World War II era and certain historical events of the last century, Reid noted that human-rights laws as we know them today had been shaped "to protect the individual from states with 'fascist inclinations,' whereas the challenge today [is] a threat to society from 'what might be called fascist individuals.'"
Heute legen die Anti-Terrorkrieger jedenfalls gewaltig nach:Speaking at Scotland Yard, Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson said the plot would have caused "mass murder on an unimaginable scale". ... Mr Reid said: "We are involved in a long, wide and deep struggle against very evil people." Another senior Met officer, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, said "an unprecedented level of surveillance" led up to the arrests, and said the plot had a "global dimension". ... US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the conspiracy was sophisticated, well-advanced and well-planned and "suggestive of an al Qaeda plot". He introduced a ban on liquids being carried on to US planes, saying the plotters had been planning to use liquid explosives disguised as drinks along with electronic devices made to look like everyday items. Whitehall sources said the Prime Minister and President Bush had been in contact over the plot for some time. The White House has said the plot represented a "direct threat" to the United States. Mr Bush said it was a reminder of the threat posed by "Islamic fascists". Ein paar erste Infos zu den Geheimdienst- und Polizeiaktionen im Vorfeld sind inzwischen bekannt, Details zu den Anschlagsplanungen sucht man freilich noch vergeblich: Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke said the probe had been underway for several months. He said: "The investigation has focused on intelligence which suggested that a plot was in existence to blow up transatlantic passenger aircraft in flight. "The intelligence suggested this was to be achieved by means of concealed explosive devices smuggled on to the aircraft in hand baggage. "The intelligence suggested that the devices were to be constructed in the UK and taken through British airports; the number, destination and timing of flights that might be attacked remain the subject of an investigation." Mr Clarke said this is a "very early stage" of a meticulous investigation that will "take us wherever the evidence leads". "We have been looking at meetings, movements, travel, spending and the aspirations of a large group of people. This has involved close co-operation not only between agencies and police forces in the UK but also internationally. "As is so often the case with these investigations, the alleged plot has global dimensions. "The investigation reached a critical point last night when the decision was taken to take urgent action in order to disrupt what we believed was being planned."

It looks as though the Israel-Lebanon are-we-calling-it-a-war-yet of 2006 is the first conflict to be blogged from day one.

A German TV news show segment on YouTube is racing around the blogosphere. Why? Because it is absolute proof that Hezbullah manipulates the media for their benefit. Watch it, and be horrified, as you see “Green Helmet Guy” direct the taking of pictures of the victims of Qana. The mainstream media insist they are far too savvy to fall for crude manipulation like this. And yet, proof keeps coming up that that is exactly what is happening: The media are falling utterly for all of the images coming out of Lebanon, and their critical thinking abilities aren’t even in gear.
